NYS opens facility to store untested rape kits ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) -- New York State is taking steps to protect evidence for victims of sexual offenses. A new state facility will now store rape kits for up to twenty years, giving victims time to decide how they want to move forward. "It's a recognition that no one responds to trauma in the same way and we want to extend that long enough so that people can do it anytime that works for them," said Elizabeth Cronin, Director of the NYS Office of Victim Services. Legislation to track rape kits passes both houses The facility will hold untested kits which have not yet been turned over to law enforcement. The issue previously was that each hospital had its own time frame as to how long they could store kits. The Glens Falls Police Department said it's received a high number of reports of goods stolen from unlocked vehicles - a pattern that isn't uncommon.“We see this every Spring,” said Glens Falls Police Chief Jarred Smith. “The subjects who are responsible will attempt to see if a vehicle is locked or not. If the vehicle is locked, they typically move on. Metro East music teacher charged with sexual abuse of minors MASCOUTAH, Ill. - A music instructor in the Metro East is behind bars and accused of sexual misconduct involving minors. Prosecutors have charged Reid Setterlund, 46, with two aggravated criminal sexual assault (with a victim under 18) and indecent solicitation stemming from aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The Mascoutah Police Department investigated several complaints of sexual misconduct tied to Setterlund. Police say he is accused of crimes involving two girls under the age of 18 last February.
