SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks captain Logan Couture took another step forward in his long recovery from a lower-body injury Tuesday as he participated in the team’s morning skate hours before its game against the Los Angeles Kings.Couture hadn’t taken part in practice or a morning skate with the team since the start of training camp in September but got the go-ahead to join his teammates after he visited with a physical therapist in San Francisco on Monday.“It’s been a long time for me to skate with the guys and take part in some drills with the team,” Couture said, “so I was very excited getting here this morning.”Couture smiled as he was the first Sharks player on the ice Tuesday before he went through some drills. He was even on one of the team’s penalty-killing units as San Jose ran through power play exercises.Couture remained on the ice after the main part of the morning skate was over and reported no issues afterward.Couture taking part in drills this morning. The San Francisco Giants have been active at the top end of free agency, but that doesn’t preclude them from operating at the margins. After signing center fielder Jung Hoo Lee for $113 million over six years, the Giants added another outfielder — although on a much smaller scale. Tuesday morning, the team announced they traded cash and a player to be named later for TJ Hopkins, who played 25 games for the Reds last year.Hopkins, 26, struggled with the Reds in his first MLB action, going 7-for-41. His minor league results are much more promising; the righty slashed .308/.411/.514 in Triple-A last year. The Reds selected Hopkins in the ninth round of the 2019 MLB Draft after he spent four years at the University of South Carolina.Hopkins hasn’t fit the plate discipline profile of a typical Giants position player, as he strikes out significantly more than he walks. He does have power, though, smacking 16 home runs at Triple-A in 2023.The Reds designated Hopkins for assignmen...The top seven most expensive home sales in Saratoga, reported the week of Dec. 4

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday he’s certain the United States will make good on its promise to provide billions of dollars in further aid for Kyiv to continue its fight against Russia, and he bluntly replied “No,” to a question about whether his country might lose the war.Speaking at an end-of-year news conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy also dismissed suggestions that Moscow’s forces have come out of 2023 on top after mostly beating back Ukraine’s counteroffensive and stepping up its military production.“Russia failed to achieve any of its goals” this year, he said, although he conceded Ukraine still faces “lots of challenges” after expending Western military hardware in the counteroffensive that failed to make an impression on the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line. The U.S. Congress has left town for the holidays without a deal to send some $61 billion to Ukraine, and the U.S. Defense Department says it is almost out of money to...Live updates | Israel strikes hit Gaza as UN negotiates a cease-fire resolution
