My Sister’s Place has cut the ribbon on its new D.C. shelter, which it says will be able to host up to six families who are fleeing domestic violence situations. The group expects to start accepting clients for the building in the next few weeks, Executive Director Mercedes Lemp said. The building will always be filled, she said, “because there’s never a shortage of folks seeking shelter.”The goal, according to Lemp, is to make the facility the first stop when people flee and to help them gain a sense of safety and stability. Then, they’ll be connected to resources and traditional housing, usually in the form of their own apartment that they’d live in for a year or two. That helps with providing them with time to find a job and have some sense of financial stability, Lemp said.“Dealing with that trauma, you’ve been told that you’re no good, that you’re worthless,” Lemp said. “This is just a way to tell them that t...Man who killed two women he met a day apart in north Florida bars in 1996 is executed

I’m ready to rest a little bit and let somebody else be in charge.”No one, though, will replace him.One of baseball’s most beloved figures, Francona stepped away from the game — at least temporarily — on Tuesday, ending a 23-year managerial career that began in Philadelphia, peaked with two World Series titles in Boston and concluded with an 11-season stay in Cleveland.Although his decision to leave the Guardians has been known for weeks, Francona and t...Giants to begin their managerial search with internal candidates this week

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants hope to begin interviewing internal managerial candidates this week as they seek to replace Gabe Kapler, who was fired last Friday with three games left in a second straight losing season.President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi said discussions are underway about who the club would like to speak with from inside the organization initially, probably a couple of people — and Zaidi is relying on input from retired catcher Buster Posey, who’s now part of the ownership group.Zaidi also noted he hopes to begin reaching out to other franchises early next week to receive permission to interview people on those staffs. While Zaidi has one year remaining on his contract and that brings potential instability, he stressed that San Francisco is a desirable destination nonetheless. His said his focus right now is finding a manager and not on his own negotiations for an extension.“The amount on incoming calls we’ve gotten serves to sup...Montgomery sparkles, Rangers beat sloppy Rays 4-0 in AL Wild Card Series opener
